The united opposition principals have signed a unity pledge aimed at consolidating their political alliance and paving the way for a joint presidential candidate ahead of the 2027 General Election.
The leaders signed the agreement on Monday, August 24, following a meeting held at the Windsor Hotel in Kiambu County.
The opposition principals said they had unanimously agreed to execute both a Personal Unity Pledge and a Coalition Unity Agreement, committing themselves individually and collectively to maintaining unity within the coalition.
“After extensive and candid consultations, we have unanimously agreed to execute a Personal Unity Pledge and a Coalition Unity Agreement, through which each Principal commits individually and collectively to remain united, participate in a credible process of selecting our presidential candidate, and thereafter fully support and campaign for the candidate chosen to carry our common mandate into the 2027 General Election,” the leaders said in a joint statement.
Under the agreement, the principals will participate in what they described as a credible process to select their presidential candidate.
They further pledged to support and campaign for the candidate who will be selected to carry the coalition’s common mandate in the 2027 polls.
The leaders said the move was driven by what they described as growing demand from Kenyans for an alternative to individual leaders and established political parties.
They argued that millions of Kenyans were looking beyond personalities and partisan interests and were seeking leaders capable of putting national interests ahead of personal ambitions and historical political differences.
“We recognise that millions of Kenyans are looking beyond individual leaders and political parties. They are asking whether those seeking to provide alternative leadership have the courage to put aside personal ambitions, historical differences and partisan considerations in defence of the greater national interest,” the united opposition leaders stated.
