National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has been selected to serve on the advisory panel of the Conference of Speakers and Presidents of African Legislatures (CoSPAL).
In a statement on Sunday, October 27, Wetang’ula said he was honored to have been selected to serve in the continental body.
Wetang’ula was represented at the conference by Ugenya MP David Ochieng, who is a member of the speaker’s panel.
“Honoured to have been selected to serve on the advisory panel of the Conference of Speakers and Presidents of African Legislatures (CoSPAL).
“I was represented by Ugenya MP Hon. David Ochieng’ who expressed my commitment to serve with diligence. Formed in 2020, CoSPAL’s mission is to unify Africa’s legislative leaders to confront shared challenges across the continent,” said Wetang’ula.
Over 10 Speakers from African nations were in attendance, alongside at least 20 Deputy Speakers and Vice Presidents of Legislatures.
CoSPAL was established as a platform to facilitate increased consultation, cooperation and collaboration between Speakers and Presidents of Parliaments and National Assemblies across Africa.
The Pan-African organization was formed in 2020 and focuses on addressing common challenges, developing joint strategies and mobilising collective action to advance Africa’s development.
The 1st General Assembly was held in May 2022 in Abuja, under the leadership of the then Speaker of the House of Representatives of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Rt. Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila, where the foundation was laid for the convergence of heads of African legislatures on critical issues relating to post-COVID economic recovery and democratic development.
