Fresh political tensions are emerging within the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) following reports of competing high-profile events scheduled for this Saturday, signaling a possible battle for the party’s future leadership.
A meeting convened by ODM leader Oburu Odinga was initially planned to take place at Ciala Resort, with expectations that it would be hosted by Anyang’ Nyong’o, the Governor of Kisumu.
However, Governor Nyong’o has reportedly withdrawn from the meeting and will not attend, raising questions about internal support for the gathering.
At the same time, attention is shifting to Bondo, where a major homecoming rally is scheduled for Winnie Odinga. The event will be hosted by James Orengo, the Governor of Siaya County.
The Bondo rally will mark Winnie Odinga’s return to her late father’s ancestral home and her formal entry into active politics.
During the event, she is expected to thank local residents for their support of her family following the death of Raila Odinga three months ago.
Political analysts interpret the timing and symbolism of the Bondo rally as a strong indication that Winnie Odinga is positioning herself to challenge her uncle, Oburu Odinga, in a looming contest over ODM’s future direction.
Reports further suggest that she enjoys the full backing of her mother, Ida Odinga, reinforcing perceptions of a shifting center of influence within the party.
Adding to the sense of realignment, Rosa Buyu is expected to attend the Bondo rally, a move that would leave Oburu Odinga’s Kisumu meeting with a diminished circle of allies.
As these parallel events unfold, political observers will be closely watching developments in Kisumu and Bondo, viewing the weekend as a potential turning point that could significantly reshape internal power dynamics within the ODM party.
