Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has been rushed to hospital after he fell ill minutes before his cross-examination in the Senate.
His lawyer Paul Muite told the Senate on Wednesday that the Deputy President felt unwell during a lunch break at the impeachment trial.
“The sad reality is that the Deputy President of the Republic of Kenya has been taken very sick and as I address Mr Speaker and this House, he is in the hospital,” said Muite.
He requested Senate Speaker Amason Kingi to provide his legal team time to monitor the progress of DP Gachagua.
“My proposal is that you give me the rest of the day to have an assessment of the DP situation and come back by 5 pm after seeing him and speaking to the doctor,” Muite added.

Following the request, Speaker Kingi suspended the impeachment trial against Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua until 5 pm.
“Having considered the two sides, my directions are as follows we will suspend this sitting and resume exactly 5:00 pm. So we expect the DP then to take the witness stand at 5:00 pm. This is a time-bound process, unfortunately. It is so ordered,” Kingi directed.
DP Gachagua was set to give his statement and be cross-examined by lawyers representing the National Assembly.
The Senate is expected on Thursday night to vote on the 11 charges facing Gachagua.
The Senate requires at least 45 votes for impeachment to succeed, and proceedings are expected to be contentious.
