Deputy President Kithure Kindiki on Monday, November 11 replaced former DP Rigathi Gachagua as the UDA Deputy Party Leader.
DP Kindiki was designated the role during a meeting of the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) that resolved to remove Gachagua following his impeachment.
“The national executive committee notes: That by virtue of the resolution of the National Assembly and the vote of the Senate and by operation of Articles 75 (3) and145 (7) of the Constitution of Kenya as read together with Article 8.2.19 of the UDA Party Constitution, H.E. Rigathi Gachagua is unable to perform the duties of the office of Deputy Party Leader and subsequently ceases to hold office as Deputy Party leader.
“The National Executive Committee Now Resolves: To designate H.E. Prof. Kithure Kindiki, EGH as the Deputy Party Leader of the United Democratic Alliance Party effective immediately,” UDA National Chairperson Cecily Mbarire announced.
Speaking after assuming the role, Kindiki said he was ready to serve in the new position, adding that NEC’s decision to appoint a new deputy party leader was timely.
“I want to assure you of my unwavering party to the ideals that our party stands for. I will work with all the organs established under our party constitution for the good and better performance of our party,” he said.
The move comes a week after Omar revealed plans to replace Gachagua as deputy leader following his impeachment and strained relationship with the party leadership.
Gachagua was impeached by the National Assembly on 8 October, a decision that was confirmed by the Senate on October 17.
Several senior UDA party officials, including Mbarire, Hassan Omar, and national treasurer Japheth Nyakundi attended the Monday NEC meeting.
