Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna
Nairobi Senator Edwin Watenya Sifuna has been ousted as the Senate Deputy Minority Whip.
Senate Speaker Amason Kingi announced Sifuna’s removal from the position on Thursday, July 16, during the afternoon plenary sitting.
Speaker Kingi announced that Migori Senator Eddy Gicheru Oketch will replace the Nairobi Senator in the powerful position.
“By a letter dated July 16, 2026, I received correspondence from the Senate Minority Leader, Senator Stewart Madzayo, regarding the removal of Senator Edwin Sifuna as the Deputy Senate Minority Whip and the election of Senator Eddy Gicheru Oketch to replace him,” Kingi said.
Speaking after being removed from the position, Sifuna thanked the Minority leadership and senators for their support during his tenure.
The Nairobi Senator also congratulated his successor, Senator Oketch, and wished him all the best in the role.
“I thank the leadership and members for the cooperation they have given me during my time as the Deputy Senate Minority Whip. I congratulate my young brother, Senator Eddy Oketch, on his new role,” Sifuna stated.
This comes days after the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties (ORPP) formally recognised Sifuna’s removal as the ODM Secretary-General.
In a letter, the ORPP said the decision followed a review of documents submitted by ODM as well as the absence of a response from Sifuna regarding the matter.
“Upon review of the documents submitted by the party and the lack of response from Hon. Edwin Watenya Sifuna, we note that the removal of the party Secretary-General was in line with the Political Parties Act, Cap. 7D, and the ODM party constitution,” the letter read.
The ORPP also announced that it had effected the change and updated the party records following Sifuna’s ouster from the position.
