The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has fined Nakuru Town East Member of Parliament David Gikaria Ksh2.5 Million.
Gikaria was slapped with the fine on Tuesday, July 14, by IEBC’s Dispute Resolution Committee over remarks he made on voter handouts in Ol Kalou.
“The committee has considered all the submissions and authenticated digital evidence, and found that the Honourable David Gikaria is culpable on all three counts,” committee chairperson Alutalala Mukhwana said.
Mukhwana also directed Gikaria to issue a public apology on Wednesday, July 15, at 10 am at Anniversary Towers in Nairobi CBD.
“Gikaria shall issue a public retraction and apology on Wednesday, 15th July 2026, at 10 a.m. at Anniversary Towers before the public and to the people of Ol Kalou and the country, undertaking that that was wrong and that it shall not be repeated,” Mukhwana noted.
Further, IEBC directed that the evidence presented before the committee be forwarded to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) for investigations into possible offences under the Elections Offences Act.
Gikaria had openly admitted to spending Ksh1.2 million in a single day while campaigning for United Democratic Alliance (UDA) candidate Samuel Nyagah in Ol Kalou.
This comes days after IEBC fined Kipipiri MP Wanjiku Muhia Ksh1.5 million fine over her controversial comments during a rally in Ol Kalou.
“The Committee hereby condemns and directs Hon Wanjiku Muhia to pay a fine of Ksh 1.5 million to the IEBC within 72 Hours of this judgment,” Mukhwana announced.
The committee also cautioned the DCP-allied MP against repeating such remarks, stating that they had the potential to incite violence, hatred, hostility and intimidation, and could undermine peaceful electoral campaigns.
However, Muhia moved to court and secured orders suspending the enforcement of a Ksh1.5 million fine issued by IEBC.
