Huldah Hiltsley Momanyi, a Kenyan-American has made history in the United States after she successfully vied and won a seat in the Minnesota House of Representatives for District 38A5.
Huldah who was vying under the Democratic Farmer Labor (DFL) party, received 64.78 percent (10,005) of the vote, while her Republican rival, Brad Olson, received 34.95 percent.
This historic victory makes Huldah the first Kenyan-born immigrant to be elected to a state legislature in the US.
Speaking after winning the seat, the Kenyan-American expressed her gratitude as she acknowledged her feat was almost inconceivable.
“It doesn’t feel real, I don’t think I was expecting to do that well. 65 percent, that’s a big margin, right? That just goes to show you the work that my team has put into this race.”
“That is history in the making. Not only the first Kenyan-American in the Minnesota Legislature but the first Kenyan-born in the entire U.S. to be elected into office” said Huldah.
The mother of two was born in Nyamira County, Kenya in 1985 and moved to the US at the age of nine.
Huldah holds three bachelor’s degrees from Bethel University; international business, international relations, and reconciliation studies.
She also boasts a Master’s degree in Global Business Management at the same institution.
The former president of Mwanyagetinge, a Kenyan community organization in Minnesota previously vied for the Minnesota State Senate seat in 2022.
Meanwhile, the presidential win is leaning towards former President Donald Trump.
