National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah has dismissed social media reports that he is eyeing the Interior Cabinet Secretary position should Kithure Kindiki assume the Deputy President’s office.
Speaking on Monday 21 October in Rabai, Kilifi County Ichung’wah denied the reports, saying he already had a job representing the people of the Kikuyu constituency in the National Assembly.
He also insisted that his role in ousting impeached DP Rigathi Gachagua from office was in the service of the nation, dismissing accusations that he had a personal vendetta against the man of the mountain.
“There’s a leader who said that I should take up the Interior CS’s position. Let me tell him that I already have a duty that I’m doing and don’t want to confuse people. I led the front at the National Assembly during the impeachment motion and it’s not because we hated one person, it’s because we loved development more,” said Ichung’wah.
He added, “I did not do it so as to get another position. I am not interested in a CS position. I have a duty for the people of Kikuyu and at the National Assembly.”
Ichung’wah went on to say he will continue to support President Ruto and the Kenya Kwanza government in implementing their manifesto in his capacity as an MP and Majority Leader.
Ichung’wah is one of the names that critics said could benefit from Gachagua’s removal. He could take either the DP or the interior docket.
On Friday last week, President Ruto nominated CS Kindiki to be his deputy and the nomination was approved by the National Assembly.
However, this was curtailed when the courts issued protective orders, suspending the Senate’s impeachment and barring Kindiki from assuming office until Gachagua’s case was heard and decided.
