President William Ruto has said that the government is putting in place new laws and regulations to help the country’s IT-enabled services thrive.
The President said the aim of these measures is to help the government capitalise on opportunities in the business process outsourcing (BPO) services industry.
As a result, the government is enhancing the country’s competitiveness and aligning it with global norms to spur growth in the BPO market and other IT-enabled services.
He said the aim is to increase government investment in the necessary infrastructure, such as national broadband and digital hubs, to create at least one million jobs in the digital sector over the next five years.
“We are determined to claim our fair share of the BPO pie for the benefit of our young men and women who are eager to contribute to the growth of our economy,” he said.
He said Kenya’s strengths include a large, skilled, and young workforce; government policies that prioritize the digital economy as a strategic pillar of the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda; an education system that emphasizes digital skills; a strategic geographical location that aligns with global time zones; and proficiency in English, a language widely used in major economies.
President Ruto made the remarks during the opening of the Call Centre International (CCI) Global Contact Centre in Tatu City, Ruiru, Kiambu County, which has already created over 5,000 jobs.
