President William Ruto on Monday congratulated the Republic of Botswana’s new President, Duma Boko following his victory in the recent elections.
In a statement, Ruto said Boko’s decisive and historic victory is a clear affirmation of the trust and confidence that the people of Botswana have in his leadership, vision, and dedication to advancing Botswana’s development and prosperity.
President Ruto said that under Boko’s leadership, Kenya and Botswana will continue to enjoy cordial relations grounded in shared values and a commitment to bolstering their relations.
“I am confident that under your guidance, this partnership will continue to flourish, fostering deeper ties that benefit both our peoples and contribute to regional stability and prosperity,” said Ruto.
Boko became President after his alliance’s shock victory in last week’s elections.
The 54-year-old of the Umbrella for Democratic Change (UDC) replaces President Mokgweetsi Masisi who has already conceded defeat.
The Umbrella for Democratic Change, led by Boko, secured 22 seats, while the Botswana Congress Party, led by Dumelang Saleshando, took eight. The Botswana Patriotic Front, a party founded by supporters of former President Ian Khama, won five seats.
President Boko was sworn into office during a closed session at the office of the chief justice.
In his first public address, Boko thanked the people of Botswana for their confidence and pledged to work diligently.
“I pledge with every fiber of my being that I will do everything I can, not to fail, not to disappoint, appreciating always the enormity of the responsibility bestowed upon me by the people of this republic. It is their government,” he said.
