National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has officially declared a vacancy in Parliament following the passing of nominated Member of Parliament Denar Joseph Hamisi.
Hamisi, a member of the Kenya Kwanza alliance, died on Saturday, December 6, 2025, at the age of 56.
The declaration was made in a gazette notice dated January 2, 2026, in accordance with Articles 101 (2) (a) and 103 (1) (a) of the Constitution.
The late MP was nominated to the National Assembly under the Amani National Congress (ANC) party after the 2022 General Election.
In Parliament, he served on the Departmental Committee on Sports and Culture, as well as the Select Committee on National Cohesion and Equal Opportunities.
Speaker Wetang’ula praised Hamisi for his diligence and commitment, describing his death as a “profound loss to Parliament and the nation.”
Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, also mourned Hamisi, calling him a “principled and dependable leader.”
Unlike elected parliamentary seats, the process of filling a nominated MP’s position does not involve a by-election.
Instead, the political party that nominated the deceased member, in this case, the ANC party, will appoint a replacement from its original party list submitted to the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) before the last general election.
This procedure is outlined under the Elections Act.
Born in 1969 in Kinango, Kwale County, Hamisi had a distinguished career in public administration before entering Parliament, holding various significant roles including director of the Coast Development Authority and commissioner at the former Electoral Commission of Kenya.
