Atlético Madrid has completed the signing of midfielder Conor Gallagher from Chelsea for roughly €40 million.
Gallagher spent five days in Madrid earlier this month, with Atlético stating that he was at their Metropolitano Stadium as his signing was being negotiated, but was forced to return to the UK because Omorodion’s trade fell through.
After a week of negotiations, Chelsea decided to sign João Félix from Atlético, allowing Gallagher’s transfer to proceed. He signed a deal that runs until 2029.
Chelsea’s most recent offer to Gallagher was a two-year contract with a third-season option and a hefty salary increase.
The 24-year-old had previously turned down a transfer to Aston Villa, and Tottenham who had been following his situation for several months.
Gallagher progressed through Chelsea’s system and established himself in the main squad following a successful loan to Crystal Palace in 2021-22.
He played 136 Premier League games, scoring 18 goals and assisting 13 times. Atlético has made several transfers this summer, including defender Robin Le Normand and attackers Alexander Sorloth and Julián Álvarez.
Gallagher also said a personal goodbye to Chelsea in a post on social media.
“To everyone at Chelsea, thank you for making my dreams come true. It’s been an absolute honour every time I put on the shirt, and it was a dream come true to captain the team on many occasions,” said Gallagher.
He added, “I loved every moment. These memories will last forever. I appreciate all the love and support from the fans. Hearing the chant of my name at the Bridge is a special feeling, and the banner you displayed meant the world to me. Thank you for everything. I wish the club all the best for the future, and I hope to see you all soon at Stamford Bridge!”
