Ole Gunnar Solskjaer
Bayern Munich is considering Xabi Alonso, Zinedine Zidane, and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer if it decides to part ways with Thomas Tuchel this summer.
The pressure on Tuchel has risen following Bayern’s 3-2 setback at Bochum on Sunday, which leaves the Germans eight points behind Alonso’s Bundesliga leaders Bayer Leverkusen.
It was also their third consecutive setback, having lost 1-0 at Lazio in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 encounter last week.
Facing its first trophyless season in 12 years, Bayern’s primary goal is to finish the season with Tuchel and honestly examine the situation.
Following the humiliating defeat at Bochum, Bayern’s leadership instantly chose to continue with Tuchel, with the former Chelsea and PSG manager not considering leaving the team.
Work is being done in the background on his prospective replacement, and Alonso is thought to be the best option internally if Tuchel leaves in the summer.
The former Liverpool player is the bookmakers’ favorite to succeed Jurgen Klopp at Anfield this summer, having impressed at Leverkusen. Klopp recently praised the Spaniard as the “standout” manager among the new generation of bosses.
Another significant contender that Bayern has been considering in recent hours and days is ex-Real Madrid head coach Zinedine Zidane.
There is nothing specific at this point, but Bayern admires the Frenchman’s aura and expertise, as well as the fact that he is immediately available.
The 51-year-old, who has been unemployed since departing Real Madrid in May 2021, won the Champions League three times during his tenure as manager, as well as the La Liga title twice.
Bayern have also considered former Manchester United manager Solskjaer as a possible interim solution if they are forced to make a change before the end of the season.
Christoph Freund, Bayern’s sporting director, knows Solskjaer well and has been monitoring his progress for years. However, there have been no concrete discussions concerning such a possibility.
