Liverpool moved up to the top of the Premier League table with a 2-1 victory over struggling Wolverhampton Wanderers. Ibrahima Konaté scored his first-ever Premier League goal, while Mohamed Salah converted a penalty.
After six games, Arne Slot’s team leads both Manchester City and Arsenal with 15 points, while Wolves sit last with just one point.
Diogo Jota outran his defender down the left before setting up a precise cross that Konate, a 25-year-old center-back, leaped to head home in first-half injury time.
But Wolves took advantage of some sloppy Konate defense to draw even in the 56th. Rayan Aït-Nouri scored from close range after Jorgen Strand Larsen stopped the French center-back from running out for a goal kick.
However, five minutes later, Salah quieted the jubilant Molineux fans as Liverpool was awarded a penalty for Nélson Semedo’s foul on Jota. Salah sent goalkeeper Sam Johnstone the wrong way.
Liverpool’s triumph coincides with a hectic schedule. On Wednesday, Slot’s team defeated West Ham United 5-1 in a League Cup third-round encounter. Four days later, they will play Bologna in a Champions League match.
The woeful Wolves, led by Gary O’Neill, have not won a clean sheet in eighteen games since defeating Sheffield United 1-0 in February of last year.
