Inter Miami is now one step closer to the top seed in the MLS Cup playoffs thanks to Lionel Messi.
With a 1-1 draw against Charlotte FC on Saturday night, Inter Miami extended their unbeaten streak to eight consecutive Major League Soccer games thanks to a goal from Messi in the 67th minute. In 16 league games so far this season, Messi has scored 15 goals.
After Saturday’s 2-2 draw between Columbus and D.C. United, Inter Miami moved eight points ahead of the Crew for the top seed in the Eastern Conference. In addition, Inter Miami leads the LA Galaxy by seven points for the top overall MLS playoff seed.
On Wednesday, Inter Miami plays at Columbus, victory would guarantee the top seed in the East.
With three games remaining, Inter Miami has 65 points, while Columbus has 57 points after four games. Should Inter Miami prevail, its final point total will be 74, one more than the MLS record of 73, which was set by New England in 2021.
The game was Inter Miami’s next-to-last home regular season fixture. Following Wednesday’s matchup against Columbus, the team travels to Toronto on October 5 before hosting New England on October 19 to complete the 34-game schedule at home. Next weekend, Inter Miami will host its home playoff opener.
