Egypt has announced that it will join a genocide complaint launched by South Africa against Israel at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) for its murderous offensive in Gaza.
In a statement, the Egyptian Foreign Ministry said the action comes “in light of the escalating severity and scope of Israeli assaults against Palestinian civilians in Gaza, as well as the systematic targeting of civilians and destruction of infrastructure in the Strip.”
Egypt urged Israel, the occupying authority, to comply with its commitments and adopt the interim measures recommended by the ICJ to ensure the delivery of humanitarian aid to Gaza.
It also called on the UN Security Council and all stakeholders to intervene immediately to establish a cease-fire in Gaza, halt military operations in Rafah, and safeguard the Palestinian people.
Earlier this month, the chairman of the Turkish Grand National Assembly’s Justice Committee stated that Turkey has officially requested involvement in South Africa’s genocide complaint against Israel at the International Court of Justice (ICJ).
According to Article 63 of the ICJ Statute, Türkiye has the right to intervene in the case and present its point of view.
Turkey’s Foreign Minister, Hakan Fidan, announced Ankara’s intervention, emphasizing the country’s commitment to justice and position against genocide.
The decision also aligned with Turkey’s broader foreign policy aims, particularly its Middle East strategy and support for Palestinian rights.
According to Israeli data, more than 35,000 Palestinians have been killed and over 76,600 more injured in Israel’s savage assault on Gaza since a Hamas attack last October that killed almost 1,200 people.
Last Monday, the Palestinian resistance group Hamas welcomed Egypt and Qatar’s request for a cease-fire in Gaza.
However, Israel stated that the truce offer accepted by Hamas did not meet its primary criteria, and opted to proceed with an operation in Rafah, home to more than 1.5 million displaced persons, to impose “military pressure on Hamas with the goal of making progress on freeing the hostages and the other war aims.”
