Kamala Harris won the Democratic presidential nomination amid a raucous audience in Chicago, promising a “new way forward” if she defeats Republican Donald Trump in November.
The 59-year-old wanted to convey to Americans a message of togetherness and opportunity. She slammed Trump, accusing him of attempting to “take our country” backward and of cozying up to Russian President Vladimir Putin.
“On behalf of everyone whose story could only be written in the greatest nation on earth, I accept your nomination to be president of the United States of America”.
Harris promised to be a “president for all Americans” in an effort to reach out to undecided voters.
Americans had a “fleeting opportunity to move past the bitterness, cynicism, and divisive battles of the past, a chance to chart a new way forward,” she vowed, with the November election.
“We know what a second Trump term would look like,” she said, referring to a right-wing research tank’s plan for a future Republican administration. “It’s all laid out in ‘Project 2025,’ written by his closest advisors, and its total is to pull our country back to the past.”
Harris also outlined her positions on critical foreign policy concerns. She described the degree of suffering in Gaza as “heartbreaking” and vowed to secure a cease-fire agreement and “self-determination” for the Palestinian people.
Harris committed to “stand strong” with Ukraine in its struggle against Russia and to continue to assist NATO members, in contrast to Trump’s approach on both topics.
