As the US prepares to host a key NATO summit in Washington DC to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the military bloc’s founding, the trans-Atlantic alliance remains popular in many member countries, including Turkey, but confidence in Ukraine’s president is declining in Europe and the United States, according to a survey.

According to the Washington, DC-based think tank Pew Research Centre, which conducted the study in 13 NATO member nations, the median of 63 percent of adults in the countries studied have a positive impression of NATO, while 33 percent have a negative opinion.

“But there are big differences by country: The shares of adults with a positive view of NATO range from 91 percent in Poland to 37 percent in Greece,” according to Pew Research.

The American think-tank discovered that favorable views of NATO in Turkey have doubled since 2019, and a majority of individuals in Hungary, Poland, and Turkey believe NATO membership is crucial for their country’s security, “though Poles and Hungarians are more likely than Turks to say this.”

“People who support the current government in their country are more likely to have a favorable view of NATO in nine of the 13 countries surveyed,” the results of the poll revealed.

According to Pew, positive attitudes towards NATO have decreased marginally in nations such as Spain, Sweden, the United Kingdom, and the United States since 2023.

Türkiye joined the alliance in 1952 and has the second-largest army among its members, after only the United States. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is set to attend the NATO leaders conference in Washington from July 9 to 11.

Pew also questioned people in 35 nations how they perceive Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and the country he leads.

According to the survey, confidence in Ukraine’s leader has declined in numerous nations since 2023, with Poland and Hungary experiencing the greatest loss.
