The Russian army is stepping up its attacks in eastern Ukraine, military officials said, despite the Kremlin’s efforts to halt Kyiv’s weeklong incursion into Russian territory.
According to Ukraine’s General Staff, Russian troops launched 52 attacks in the area of Pokrovsk, a town near the front line in Ukraine’s Donetsk region, within the preceding 24 hours. That is nearly quadruple the number of daily attacks there a week ago.
Ukraine’s fresh offensive on Russian soil, which began on August 6, has already covered around 1,000 square kilometers of Russian territory, according to the Ukrainian military. The objectives of the rapid assault into the Kursk region remain a carefully guarded military secret.
Analysts believe a catalyst may have been Ukraine’s aim to relieve pressure on its front lines by attempting to pull Kremlin soldiers into defending Kursk and other border locations. If this is the case, the intensified pressure on Pokrovsk indicates that Moscow did not accept the bait.
Nonetheless, Ukraine’s cross-border operation — the greatest attack on Russia since World War II — has alarmed the Kremlin. It pushed Russian President Vladimir Putin to call a meeting on Monday with his top defense officials.
According to Russian officials, around 121,000 people have been evacuated from Kursk or have fled the conflict-affected districts on their own.
