Donald Trump has disparaged Detroit even further while campaigning in a suburb of the state’s largest metropolis. Trump’s visit to Novi, which comes after an event in Traverse City on Friday night, demonstrates Michigan’s importance in the tight race. More than 1.4 million ballots have already been cast, representing 20% of registered voters.
Trump won the state in 2016, but Democrat Joe Biden retained it four years later. Michigan has a sizable Arab American population, and many are frustrated by the Biden administration’s support for Israel’s assault on beleaguered Gaza.
During his event, Trump highlighted local Muslim and Arab American leaders who joined him onstage. These voters “could turn the election one way or the other,” Trump said, adding that he expected “overwhelming support” from them in Michigan.
Republican Representative Darrell Issa of California, the grandson of Lebanese immigrants, told reporters that Trump was gaining support from more Arab Americans and cultivating partnerships with Middle Eastern leaders to bring more stability to the region.
Historically, the Democratic Party served as the political home for Arab and Muslim Americans. That appears to have changed since Israel’s horrific war on Gaza began, as has America’s uncontrolled monetary and military support for Tel Aviv.
As a result, many Arab and Muslim Americans have rejected Vice President Kamala Harris, who replaced President Joe Biden as the Democratic presidential candidate earlier this year, particularly after she stated that she would not change Biden’s policies towards Israel.
