US Envoy Warns Of ‘Massacre’ in Sudan

Linda Thomas-Greenfield, the US envoy to the United Nations has warned of an imminent “large-scale massacre” in the Sudanese town of El Fasher, a humanitarian hub in the Darfur region, and called on countries including the UAE to stop supporting the country’s warring parties.

“The city is on the verge of a massacre.” This is not conjecture. “This is the grim reality for millions of people,” Thomas-Greenfield told journalists during a UN Security Council meeting in Sudan on Monday.

“There are already credible reports that RSF and its allied militias have destroyed several villages west of El Fasher, and as we speak RSF is planning an imminent attack on El Fasher,” which “would be a catastrophe on top of a catastrophe,” Thomas-Greenfield said.

Thomas-Greenfield, who is often seen raising her hand against UN resolutions condemning Israel’s activities in the besieged Gaza Strip, has come under heavy criticism for supporting Tel Aviv, whose assault on Gaza has already reached “genocidal proportions”, according to analysts.

The city had previously been relatively undisturbed by fighting between the Sudanese Armed Forces [SAF] and the Rapid Support Forces [RSF], but bombings and clashes have been reported there and in neighbouring areas since mid-April.

The US has also called on other countries, including the United Arab Emirates, to end their support for Sudan’s warring parties, saying a ‘crisis of epic proportions is brewing’.

The UAE denies providing military support to any of Sudan’s warring parties.

“The United Arab Emirates … does not supply arms or ammunition to any faction involved in the ongoing conflict in Sudan,” UAE Ambassador to the UN Mohamed Abushahab wrote to the Security Council on 25 April.
