The CEOs of OpenAI, Microsoft, and Google are among the prominent members of a new federal board established to advise the US government on the “safe and secure” development of artificial intelligence.
The new advisory board will assist authorities in combating AI-related disruptions that may “impact national or economic security, public health, or safety,” the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).
President Joe Biden directed agency Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas to form the 22-member board. Mayorkas stated that, while AI is a transformational technology, “it presents real risks.”
“The Board will help DHS stay ahead of evolving threats posed by hostile nation-state actors and reinforce our national security,” it said in a statement.
Unfriendly forces may utilize AI to launch larger-scale, faster attacks on targets such as pipelines, railways, and other essential infrastructure, the report claimed.
“Artificial intelligence is the most transformative technology of our time, and we must ensure that it is deployed safely and responsibly,” Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said in the statement.
Other high-profile board members include the CEOs of Adobe, Alphabet, Advanced Micro Devices, Cisco, IBM, Nvidia, Delta Airlines, and Northrop Grumman. The board also comprises academics and officials, including Maryland’s governor.
The board will meet for the first time in early May to provide recommendations for the safe use of AI “in the essential services Americans depend on every day,” according to the statement.
