Bishop David Kariuki Ngari popularly known as Gakuyo was on Monday, February 26 arraigned before the Milimani Law Courts over conspiracy to steal Ksh. 1,052,746,094 from the members of Ekeza Sacco Society Limited.
Gakuyo was charged with 12 counts, including 1 count of conspiracy to commit a felony contrary to Section 393 of the Penal Code, and 11 counts of obtaining money by false pretense contrary to Section 313 of the Penal Code.
The preacher denied all the charges before Senior Principal Magistrate Ben Mark Ekhubi and was released on a Ksh 20 million bond with two sureties and an alternative cash bail of Ksh 10 million with two contact persons, one of whom must be a public officer.
“The contact persons are to be examined by the court and one must be a public officer,” Ekhubi ordered.
Ekhubi also instructed Gakuyo to surrender his passport to the court and refrain from tampering with the ongoing investigation.
It is alleged that Gakuyo conspired to steal Ksh. 1,052,746,094 from Ekeza Sacco Society Limited members between 2015 and 2018 at their offices in Yala Towers in Nairobi, Nairobi County.
He was arrested on Wednesday, February 21 at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) and barred from catching his flight to Zambia.
“They say I cannot leave the country. I’m at JKIA. I just think there is some revenge somewhere. I’m happy I might get an opportunity to see the judge and be told on what case I have. Right now I’m at the DCI airport,” Gakuyo said in avideo.
Gakuyo’s woes started in 2019 the High Court also froze his multi-billion properties and bank accounts after Gakuyo attempted to sell his properties claiming he wanted to pay his creditors.
He unsuccessfully contested for the Thika Town parliamentary seat in the 2022 General Election on an Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party.
