Inside Rachel Ruto’s Plan To Plant 500 Million Trees

First Lady Mama Rachel Ruto on Tuesday, February 27 launched the First Lady’s Landscape and Ecosystem Restoration Strategy and implementation plan for growing 500 million trees.

In a statement, the office of the First Lady said Mama Rachel will work with various stakeholders and espouse different strategies to achieve this ambitious commitment.

“These include; forest adoption; promoting the establishment of women and youth-led tree nurseries; promoting tree growing through agroforestry for improved livelihoods; growing of forests and fruit trees within institutions and schools; and catalyzing access to finance to accelerate locally-led land restoration efforts and climate action,” read the statement in part.

According to the First Lady’s office, she will focus on Kenya Forest Service’s “Adopt a Forest Framework” which is a program aimed at engaging individuals, communities, and organizations in the conservation and management of forests in Kenya.

The First Lady will work with spouses of Governors, Senators, Parliamentarians; and elected Women Representatives to adopt degraded forests in their respective counties, constituencies, and communities.

Rachel will also focus on the creation and development of green spaces and arboreta a program that will see the establishment of public parks and gardens that provide recreational spaces for the community.

Further, she will focus on the Green Tree Commodity Initiative will promote an ambitious transformative green economy initiative through tree commodities in Kenya.

Rachel Ruto urged all like-minded stakeholders to form a united front in support of Kenya’s tree-growing efforts, adding that connecting with like-minded organizations and individuals strengthens our impact and fosters a shared vision for a sustainable future.

“By joining hands, we can amplify our impact on a national scale, maximize resources, leverage the strengths of our partners, and create a domino effect that propels us towards our ambitious goal of growing 500 million trees,” the statement added.
