Former Tanzanian President Ali Hassan Mwinyi has died at the age of 98.
His death was announced by Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu on Thursday 29 February at 17.30.
The Tanzanian president said Mwinyi had succumbed to cancer.
Mwinyi served as Tanzania’s second president between 1985 and 1995, succeeding founding president Julius Nyerere.
Mwinyi had been receiving medication in a London hospital before returning to Tanzania for further treatment.
On 24 February, he was admitted to hospital with a chest ailment. He died three months short of his 99th birthday.
Mwinyi is known for his role in promoting diplomatic relations between Kenya and Tanzania during his presidency.
The former Tanzanian leader also worked closely with Kenyan leaders to strengthen cooperation between the two neighbours, particularly in areas such as trade, security and infrastructure development.
His son, Hussein Ali Mwinyi, is the current President of Zanzibar within the Tanzanian archipelago.
After his presidency, Mwinyi remained an active figure in Tanzanian public life and continued to influence the country’s political landscape.
His retirement years have been marked by his involvement in various social causes, including the promotion of peace, unity and development across Africa.
President Suluhu has declared a 7-day period of mourning.
