The Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) has announced that a hyena attack on Monday night left one person dead while another who is a Multimedia University student survived the attack.

In a statement, KWS said the incident happened in the Ole Kasasi area in Rongai, Kajiado County.

The government body noted that it deployed the Problem Animal Management Unit (PAMU), who rushed the men to Wema Hospital in Rongai.

The injured were then referred to The Kenyatta National Hospital for specialized treatment, after First Aid was administered.

“Regrettably, another (PAMU) team left on the ground discovered the partial remains of a human being at the scene, which were then retrieved by Kenya Police. The identity of the deceased has since been confirmed and family members contacted,” read the statement in part.

Distressed Multi Media University students on Tuesday staged demonstrations outside the KWS Workshop Gate opposite the university over the hyena attack.

According to KWS, the protests escalated while senior officers held an emergency meeting with the university’s Vice Chancellor Professor Maranga and her team.

“KWS Senior Assistant Director for Southern Conservation Area, Adan Kalla, MMU Vice Chancellor Professor Maranga, and OCPD Rongai addressed the agitated students, and KWS outlined mitigation measures taken to contain the hyenas,” KWS stated.

The service mentioned that the PAMU team promptly put down one hyena and proceeded to further launch an operation to identify any surrounding hyena dens.

The veterinary team accompanying PAMU are investigating the hyena carcass, to ascertain whether they could be infected with rabies or other zoonotic diseases.

Further KWS called on area residents to be vigilant since the southern part of Nairobi National Park is not fenced, and is a wildlife migratory corridor.

The wildlife body promised that the PAMU team will remain on standby until all hyenas in Ole Kasasi are driven back into the park to enhance protection of members.
