Manchester United won 2-1 over Luton Town in the Premier League on Sunday, bringing them closer to the top four. Rasmus Højlund scored twice early on.
The Denmark striker Højlund took advantage of a defensive error to give United the lead after 37 seconds. He then made it 2-0 with only seven minutes remaining to put his team in charge. Højlund is the youngest player ever to score in six consecutive Premier League games.
Højlund took until December to score his first Premier League goal after United signed him from Italian club Atalanta for £72 million ($90.71 million) in August.
However, he is now repaying the transfer fee, relieving pressure on manager Erik ten Hag and assisting United in their strong push for Champions League qualifying.
Relegation battlers Luton recovered and replied admirably, with Carlton Morris’ daring header cutting the score in the 14th minute. The only surprise in a wide-open game was that no more goals were scored, despite both teams creating decent opportunities.
Sixth-placed United squandered numerous golden opportunities in the second half, and Luton’s Ross Barkley hit the crossbar in stoppage time. United’s fourth consecutive league win moved them to 44 points from 25 games, five behind fourth-placed Aston Villa.
Those missed chances almost cost United dearly, as the superb Barkley came close to an equalizer later on. Luton remain in 17th place with 20 points from 24 games, although Everton might go ahead of them if they draw against Crystal Palace on Monday.
