Paris Saint-Germain has won the Ligue 1 title following AS Monaco’s away loss to Lyon on Sunday, giving the club 12 league triumphs in its existence.
PSG were held to a shocking 3-3 draw by Le Havre on Saturday, forcing them to rely on second-placed Monaco not winning if they were to be named champions this weekend.
Despite PSG’s draw on Saturday, Monaco’s loss dropped them to 59 points, 11 behind PSG’s total of 70, putting the title out of reach with only three games left in the season.
The French giants remain on track to win all four of the trophies available to them this season, which is likely to be Kylian Mbappe’s final season at the French club.
Since its purchase by the state-backed Qatari Sports Investment in 2011, the Parisian club has won ten of the last thirteen championships.
It means defending champions PSG have increased their lead in Ligue 1 titles over Saint-Etienne, who won their tenth title in 1981 but were demoted to the second level two seasons ago.
Despite projections that he will join Real Madrid this summer, Mbappe, with 26 league goals, has been critical to PSG’s success in a season of transition following the departures of Neymar and Lionel Messi last summer.
He is on track to win the league’s top scorer award for a record sixth time. The French captain shares five such honors with Carlos Bianchi, Delio Onnis, and Jean-Pierre Papin.
Since joining the club in the summer of 2017, Mbappé has won the French title in six of seven seasons, with the exception of 2020-21, when Christophe Galtier’s Lille beat the Parisians by one point.
The league triumph marks PSG’s second trophy of the season, following their win in the Super Cup in January.
They are still in contention for the Champions League, where they will meet Borussia Dortmund in a two-legged semifinal in early May, as well as the French Cup, where they will face Lyon in the final.
