Seven people on Wednesday evening lost their lives after being involved in a gruesome road accident at Katito in Nyakach, Kisumu.
In a statement, the National Police Service (NPS) said the accident happened after a 14-seater matatu collided with a tipper lorry.
Police Officers from Pap Onditi have launched investigations into the Wednesday evening accident.
“Traffic Police Officers from Pap Onditi Police Station have launched an investigation into the tragic accident in which 7 people have lost their lives today 21/2/24 at about 1700 hrs within Nyalunya area along Katito-Kendu Bay Road after a 14-seater matatu with an unconfirmed number of passengers collided with a tipper lorry. The National Police Service is appealing to motorists to exercise extra caution on our roads,” NPS stated.
The matatu was heading to Homa Bay when the lorry ferrying sand had a tire burst, veered from its lane, and hit it.
The injured passengers were rushed to Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital for medical attention while the bodies of those who succumbed were moved to the Pap Onditi sub-county hospital morgue in Nyakach sub-county.
This comes after the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) report showed that road accidents across the country have claimed 563 lives since the 2024 started.
Pedestrians lead in fatalities with 216, compared with 163 recorded last year followed by passengers who recorded 109 deaths which is 11 more compared to those recorded in 2023.
Motorcyclists recorded 140 deaths representing a decrease when compared to 151 recorded in 2023 whereas 35 drivers lost their lives in road accidents, a decrease compared to 49 in the same period last year.
