A devastating fire engulfed the Mradi Area in Embakasi on Thursday night, leaving a trail of
destruction and sending shockwaves through the community.

The fire, which broke out at around 11:30 pm according to Government Spokesman Isaac
Mwaura, resulted in numerous injuries, with those affected rushed to Mama Lucy
Kibaki Hospital for urgent medical attention.

“One Lorry of an unknown registration number that was loaded with gas exploded,
igniting a huge ball of fire that spread widely. A flying gas cylinder hit Oriental
Godown, burning down the said godown which deals with garments and textiles,”
Mwaura had noted in a statement.

Over 200 victims of the fire tragedy were taken to Mama Lucy Hospital where they are receiving medical attention.
“Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital received over 200 fire victims. The hospital staff have
worked tirelessly to provide medical aid and comfort to the injured through the
night,” Hospital Board Chairperson CHRP Dorcas Kemunto stated.

She added, “Of the victims treated at Mama Lucy Hospital, seven individuals with severe burns
have been referred to Kenyatta National Hospital, while 17 others were directed to
Kenyatta University Referral Hospital for further specialized care.”

In a show of solidarity and support, Nairobi Senator Hon. Edwin Sifuna and Embakasi
East MP Babu Owino, accompanied by the management of Mama Lucy Hospital led by Board Chair CHRP Dorcas W. Kemunto, visited the wounded.

The two leaders conveyed a message of empathy and reassurance to the victims and their
families during this challenging time.

Sifuna and Babu expressed their gratitude to the hospital and commended the medical staff for their professionalism and commitment to saving lives, highlighting the crucial role Mama Lucy Hospital had
played as a pillar of healthcare in the community.

Meanwhile, Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has announced the exemption of medical bills for
the fire victims.

The governor in his message said that the gesture of support was to
alleviate the financial burden on the affected families, allowing them to focus on the
recovery and rehabilitation of their loved ones.

“The County Government has also waived all medical fees at the County facilities attending to the injured and bereaved. We have also mobilised relief items, in conjunction with other agencies, to ensure the comfort of all those affected,” he stated.
