The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission  (EACC) detectives have arrested two police officers after demanding a Ksh 50,000 bribe from an Al Shabab suspect.

In a statement on Tuesday, EACC said the officers frisked the suspect and robbed him off an additional Ksh 57,000.

“The police officers demanded a bribe of Kes. 50,000 from a suspect they had arrested and detained for allegedly being a member of the outlawed Al-Shabaab Association as a condition for releasing the suspect. The police officers, while armed with a rifle, frisked the complainant and robbed him of an additional Kes. 57,000,” said EACC.

The two officers namely David Irungu and Hassan Liban Hassan based at Merti Sub-County within Isiolo were arrested by EACC detectives from Isiolo Regional Office and arraigned before the Isiolo Anti-Corruption Court and were charged with bribery and robbery with violence.

The accused pleaded not guilty to the bribery and robbery with violence charges and were released on a cash bail of Kes. 300,000 or surety bond of Kes. 500,000. The hearing of the case will be held on 27th May 2023.

Meanwhile EACC detectives on Monday apprehended Marsabit Central Ward Administrator Halkano Dabasso over forging a Diploma in Community Development and Social Work purporting it to be a genuine document issued by Thika Institute of Business Studies and a KCSE Certificate from KNEC.

Dabasso used the fake certificates to gain employment at Marsabit County Government where he has been working since 2018.

The arrest came after ODPP concurred with recommendations of the Commission to charge the official with 6 counts of fraudulent acquisition of public property, deceiving principal forgery, and uttering a false document.
