Kevin Kangethe who allegedly killed his girlfriend Margaret Mbitu in Massachusetts on October 31, 2023, has escaped police custody in questionable circumstances.

The suspect who was being held at the Muthaiga Police Station is reported to have fled from the station on Wednesday, February 7 evening, jumped onto a matatu, and fled to an unknown destination.

Preliminary reports indicate that a man claiming to be Kang’ethe’s lawyer visited the suspect on Wednesday afternoon. The two engaged in a brief session before Kangethe escaped and left the lawyer behind.

“A man who claimed to be his lawyer came to see him and they were both given time to converse in one of the station’s offices. Shortly after, Kangethe is said to have run off, leaving the alleged lawyer behind. Police are said to have given chase but were unable to re-arrest him. The alleged lawyer and four police officers from the station are in custody as the hunt for Kangethe commences,” Investigative journalist Allan Namu wrote on his X account.

Top police officers led by Nairobi Regional Police Commander Adamson Bungei rushed to the station on learning Kangethe had escaped.

A fresh manhunt has been launched against Kangethe who is facing a first-degree Murder in violation of the laws of the United States.

This comes days after the court granted 30-day custodial orders to the police to allow the extradition process of Kangethe to be completed.
