“Proper England fans don’t boo players,” Harry Maguire said after abuse directed at Jordan Henderson was drowned out by applause when he entered the game against Italy on Tuesday.
Henderson was booed off during England’s win against Australia on Friday, and both the midfielder and England manager Gareth Southgate retaliated after the game.
Henderson’s decision to play in the Saudi Pro League has been controversial, but Southgate argued that when he is playing for his nation, that problem should be put aside, while the former Liverpool captain stated his detractors would not affect his commitment to playing for England.
Maguire, who has had similar criticism in recent years, most recently in last month’s triumph over Scotland, when Southgate launched a vehement defense of his center-back, stood firmly with Henderson.
“Don’t boo players who play for your country and dedicate their life to play and do everything they can to make this country have good memories and special moments for them, the fans and their families.
“I know a lot of top, top England fans and I know the England fans who have been with me ever since my debut and they’re right behind me and they’re right behind Jordan as well,” said the Manchester United defender.
Given Saudi Arabia’s human rights record and the fact that homosexuality is prohibited in Saudi Arabia, LGBTQ+ support groups in both Liverpool and England condemned Henderson’s move to Al Ettifaq. During his tenure at Anfield, Henderson was an outspoken supporter of LGBTQ+ rights.
