Why Verstappen Believes Hamilton’s Final Season in Mercedes is “Weird”

Max Verstappen believes Lewis Hamilton’s move to Ferrari for 2025 did not surprise him, but the early timing of the seismic news will make things a little bit awkward at Mercedes in the current season.

Red Bull’s Verstappen was asked about his rival’s big move for the first time at the unveiling of his team’s new car, and he said it was not a surprise for me that they were talking.

“At the end of the day seeing him go to Ferrari is not a surprise. If that’s your goal as a kid or your dream then you go, right?” Said Verstappen.

“The only thing for me was that it seemed like it [the news] was a bit leaked of course and then they had to announce it because to announce something that big that early in the season I think for sure for the rest of the year is a little bit awkward. Even though you have had a lot of success together as a team, you can’t be included in everything anymore”. Added the F1 reigning champion.

Hamilton has rewritten the sport’s record books throughout his 11-year tenure with Mercedes, where he has won six of his seven world championships, in an alliance that appeared to be the conclusion of the 39-year-old’s F1 career before word of his surprising Ferrari switch broke.

Verstappen believes that, as with any driver leaving a team, Hamilton will be excluded from some discussions and information about future seasons as the season progresses.

He does not, however, expect that Mercedes will change their level of support and backing for their long serving driver.
