US President Joe Biden has stated that the explosion that killed over 500 people at Gaza’s Al Ahli Arab Hospital was not caused by Israeli air strikes.
“Based on what I’ve seen, it appears as though it was done by the other team, not you,” Biden stated during a news conference with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Wednesday, clearly referring to Israeli assertions that Islamic Jihad, a Palestinian armed group, was involved.
Both Islamic Jihad and Hamas have denied Israel’s accusation that a misfired Islamic Jihad rocket caused the hospital blast that killed an estimated 500 people.
“There are a lot of people out there who are not sure, so we have a lot of things to overcome,” said the president, who came to Israel on the same day for a hastily arranged visit amid the conflict with Hamas.
Biden also promised further aid to Israel in its continuing confrontation with the Palestinians, which escalated into open warfare 12 days ago. It should be ensured that Israel has “what you need to continue defending yourselves,” Biden added, emphasizing Israel’s right to self-defense.
“We are going to make sure that occurs, as you know,” he told Netanyahu. We also have to bear in mind that Hamas does not represent all Palestinian people,” Biden said, also claiming the group “has always brought them suffering.”
According to the Palestinian Health Ministry in Gaza’s spokesman, Ashraf al Qudra, more than 500 Palestinians were murdered in an Israeli bombardment on Al Ahli Arab Hospital in the blockaded enclave on Tuesday. Thousands of Palestinians, including women and children, were at the hospital when it was bombed. Social media footage showed corpses scattered around the hospital grounds.
