Kawira Mwangaza
Embattled Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza has been on the spot in recent weeks as Meru MCAs are plotting to impeach her for the second time in less than a year.
Mwangaza won the Meru Governorship in August 2022 as an independent Candidate, beating Agriculture CS Mithika Linturi and former governor Kiraitu Murungi.
Mwangaza’s ascension to the top of Meru politics was boosted significantly by her media investments. She co-owns the prominent Meru language TV station Baite TV and the online TV station Mwangaza TV with her spouse Murega Baichu.
The Meru County boss established Baite TV in 2015 just two years after she lost Buuri parliamentary race.
Kawira earlier revealed that she had spent over Ksh20 million on campaigning and was significantly in debt following her defeat in the polls. According to the Governor, she and her husband relocated to Ruai and focused on producing onions and tomatoes in order to rebuild their finances.
Baite TV’s inception in 2015 served as a springboard for her political comeback. Its emphasis on grassroots reporting allowed her to interact with Meru locals, particularly those in rural areas.
“A while back, my husband started a TV station. I used to help him in sourcing news here and there. That way, I got to understand the livelihoods of people on the ground,” she revealed in a previous interview.
Kawira was elected as the Meru Woman Representative in the 2017 general elections.
She was popular in the post, and she used Baite to keep her public profile up while she ran for governor in 2022.
Mwangaza worked as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Mwangaza Distributors, an energy solutions organisation she created, before running for office in 2013.
