EACC detectives have arrested Kwale County Head of Treasury Vincent Mbito and his 4 brothers working in various Departments in the county over corruption.
In a statement, EACC said the five brothers used two companies to execute fraudulent deals with the Kwale County Government worth Ksh 48.9
“The Mbitos are the Directors/owners of two companies namely Chilongola Holdings and Rome Investments (k) Limited, which they have been using to execute fraudulent deals with the Kwale County Government,” said EACC.
The five brothers include; Vincent Chirima Mbito who is the County Head of Treasury, Mongo Mbito Mongo who serves as the County Revenue Officer, Hassan Shilingi Mbito a driver at Kwale Water and Sewerage Company Limited, Mwaiwe Mongo Mbito a Kwale County Procurement Officer and Chindoro Mongo Mbit an officer at the Ministry of Health who initially worked as an Intern at Kwale County.
The Mbitos were escorted from Mombasa Central Police Station to the Mombasa Anti-Corruption Court to take a plea.
The five suspects are facing charges related to 10 contracts fraudulently awarded to the companies; Rome Investments and Chilongola Limited; which were paid exaggerated amounts Kes. 44,919,341 and Kes 4,007,943 respectively.
According to the anti-graft body, the total amount was distributed to the five suspects.
“The tenders, which they obtained in violation of procurement laws using forged documents, were for the supply and delivery of sanitation materials, food and ration, general office supplies, and institutional appliances,” EACC stated.
In a separate arrest, EACC detectives on Monday arrested Marsabit Central Ward Administrator Halkano Dabasso over forgery of academic certificates.
The suspect forged a Diploma in Community Development and Social Work purporting it to be a genuine document issued by the Thika Institute of Business Studies and a KCSE Certificate from KNEC.
