Mukumu girls high school has been closed indefinitely following the death of two students in a suspected case of water and food poisoning.
According to reports 25 students are being hospitalized at the Kakamega County General Hospital and St Elizabeth Mukumu Mission Hospital.
The students exhibited signs of diarrhea, vomiting and dizziness.
Western Region Director of education Jared Obiero has confirmed the developments at the school noting that the ministry of education is investigating the incident.
The School principal Fridah Ndolo said the two students who died were in Form One W and Form Two C.
“Let’s pray for our students and the Mukumu community. If we take a child home for treatment let us take her to hospital and monitor her. We have lost two students. God, give us grace and wisdom to go through this trying moment. May the departed souls find eternal peace,” she said.
Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale, accompanied by Woman Representative Elsie Muhanda, visited the school on Monday and called for an overhaul of the school’s management.
On Friday the Kakamega Senator called for the School to be closed down as live sof students are in danger.
“There are 20 new cases of students being admitted to hospital, presenting the same symptoms. This is a serious matter that must be addressed.”
“It is sad that more than 200 girls are affected. This calls for the attention of all leaders in the county. I propose that the principal is assisted by the Ministry of Education in closing the school because the lives of students are in danger,” said Khalwale.
